Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) material and thickness variations on the vertical vibration response of a railway carbody floor model. The experimental study was conducted using a modal shaker with nine CLD configurations consisting of two viscoelastic layer materials, namely bitumen butyl and butyl rubber, combined with variations in viscoelastic layer thickness and constrained layer thickness. The results were compared with a baseline model without Constrained Layer Damping (CLD). Excitation was applied using a random vibration method to better represent railway operating conditions, where the excitation signal was generated from track irregularity data. The vibration responses were measured using accelerometers mounted on the carbody model and the exciter. The measured acceleration signals were analyzed in both the time and frequency domains to obtain the Root Mean Square (RMS), frequency response function H(f), and dominant frequency H(fn). Furthermore, passenger ride comfort was evaluated using the Wz and Nmv indices in accordance with the EN 12299 standard. The results indicate that the implementation of CLD successfully reduced the vibration response of the carbody model compared with the model without CLD. The lowest Nmv value of 2.13 was achieved by Variation 9, whereas the model without CLD produced an Nmv value of 2.88. In general, the combination of bitumen butyl as the viscoelastic layer, a 4 mm viscoelastic layer, and a 2 mm constrained layer provided the best damping performance. These findings demonstrate that the effectiveness of CLD is not governed by a single parameter but rather by the combined effect of the viscoelastic layer material, viscoelastic layer thickness, and constrained layer thickness as an integrated damping system.
