Abstract

The rapid growth of the pet care industry, driven by the phenomenon of pet humanization, has led to an increasing demand for more structured and high-quality veterinary healthcare services. Cats, as one of the primary companion animals, exhibit behavioral characteristics that are highly sensitive to environmental changes and medical handling, requiring a more adaptive therapeutic approach. One of the most common health issues in cats is respiratory disease, particularly upper respiratory infection (URI), which often requires inhalation therapy through nebulization. However, in clinical practice, the use of conventional mask-based nebulizers often requires physical restraint, which can induce stress and discomfort in cats. Meanwhile, the use of improvised enclosed spaces lacks proper control of aerosol distribution and environmental conditions, resulting in inconsistent therapy delivery and reduced treatment effectiveness.
This study aims to develop a semi-enclosed nebulizer box design that integrates airflow control, aerosol distribution, and feline behavioral ergonomics into a structured therapeutic system. The design is positioned as a high-quality (premium) device, emphasizing animal comfort, system stability, and the use of hygienic and durable materials suitable for clinical settings. The design process employs a user-centered approach, including needs analysis, existing product studies, and concept development, which is realized in a full-scale (1:1) functional prototype.
The resulting design demonstrates improved animal comfort, reduced need for physical restraint, and more stable aerosol distribution during therapy. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of airflow management and behavior-based design within a single therapeutic device, contributing to more consistent and effective nebulization therapy for cats in veterinary clinics.
