Abstract

Public libraries as modern public learning spaces with intensive visual activities require quality natural light to support the aesthetic, functional, and psychological aspects of users. The light patterns formed in a space create a visual experience that is a main factor in influencing duration of stay, cognitive performance, productivity, and user satisfaction. Light patterns involve several components including light uniformity, shadow patches, daylight brightness, perceived light, aesthetic quality, and glare. Meanwhile, the bioclimatic aspects acts as a physical intermediary that presents light patterns into space. The perception of light patterns creates a holistic and more meaningful spatial experience for users. The research was conducted using a qualitative phenomenological strategy through observation and structured interviews with 17 respondents purposively. This research used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, which included Nvivo coding in the thematic data analysis process. This techniques aims to identify the relationship between bioclimatic aspects, natural light characteristics, and user perceptions, in order to obtain the most dominant factors in shaping the spatial experience. The results show that bioclimatic aspects influence the quality of natural light and user assessments of aesthetic perception, emotional response, space atmosphere, and visual comfort. Based on the findings of matrix coding, the dominant factors that shape the perception and experience of user space are the atmosphere and impression of light, through the interaction between glare, daylight brightness, building orientation, and aesthetic quality in the aspects of visual comfort and emotional responses. The synthesis of interactions in the study resulted in six spatial experiences that include comfortable, focused, productive, calm and relaxed, pleasant, and attractive. This research is expected to become an integrative foundation in developing a modern library design strategies that are contextual and adaptive to light phenomena and user needs in a sustainable manner.
