Abstract

Copper-doped carbon material from the thermal degradation of citric acid shows fluorescence properties with potential for optoelectronic and sensor applications. Its emission mechanism is not simple because it involves intrinsic emission (π–π*), defect states, and metal-induced states that influence one another. Earlier studies have mostly examined a single characterization technique and have not linked these three emission centers to the surface electronic structure. This study synthesizes copper-doped carbon material through the thermal degradation of citric acid and examines how doping concentration affects its fluorescence, relating the spectral deconvolution of emission to the analysis of surface structure and chemistry. Citric acid was mixed with Cu(NO3)2·3H2O at four mass variations, namely 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 g, then heated at 230 °C for 40 minutes. The material was characterized using FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and XPS. Copper incorporation is evident from the broadening of the O–H band and the change in C=O peak intensity in FTIR, along with the face-centered cubic (FCC) Cu⁰ peaks in XRD that are absent in the undoped sample. In Raman, the ID/IG ratio drops from 0.112 in CA to 0.047 in Cu-CA 0.75, while the graphitic domain size (La) grows. This indicates that copper acts as a structure-directing agent that organizes the sp² domains into a more ordered network. Fluorescence deconvolution correlated with XPS shows the emission dominance shifting from intrinsic states to defect states at intermediate doping, and then to metal-induced states at high doping. This shift agrees with the strengthening of the Cu–O–C interaction. The lowest Cu 2p₃/₂ binding energy, 932.26 eV with the narrowest FWHM, occurs in Cu-CA 0.5, indicating the most homogeneous Cu⁰/Cu⁺ state, and then rises to 933.04 eV in Cu-CA 0.75. The material's emission properties depend on the balance among these three emission centers, so the copper doping concentration can be used to control the emission.
