Abstract

This research examines the emotional needs of Generation Z as a consequence of increasingly intense modern life pressures. Gen Z seeks relaxation through products or entertainment that offer emotional fulfillment. The phenomenon of collecting blind box or figures has emerged as a means to satisfy these emotional requirements. The core appeal of blind boxes lies in the sensation of surprise derived from the dopamine spike during the unboxing process. However, the enthusiasm and satisfaction gained from these products are short-lived once the contents are revealed. This transient satisfaction leads to impulsive consumption patterns. Typically, collectors display their collections on storage shelves or carry a selection in their bags while traveling. The methodology employed in this study is qualitative, utilizing a product attachment approach to analyze the emotional bond between the product and the user. Primary data was gathered through interviews with three blind box collectors, a psychologist, and a blind box manufacturer. Secondary data was obtained from literature studies regarding Gen Z consumption behavior and supporting psychological theories. The design concept integrates product attachment principles into the bag’s design to foster positive interaction between the user and the product. Data findings indicate that 51% of respondents purchase blind boxes impulsively after seeing new series in shopping centers or on social media. The duration of satisfaction post-purchase varies: one week (40%), 3–4 days (16%), a few hours (13%), and immediately after purchase (8%). Based on the experience of carrying figures in bags, users encounter technical issues such as figure damage and disorganized displays. Consequently, the development of bag features is focused on the display system and figure protection. Through interactions such as cleaning the figures, rearranging the display, and carrying or showing them to others, it is expected to enhance long-term satisfaction.
