Abstract

The use of WhatsApp as a work communication tool enables easy coordination, but it also further blurs the line between work and personal life. This constant connectivity can escalate into techno-invasion and the demand for always-on communication, which in turn drains workers’ energy and affects their daily cognitive functioning. This study aims to analyze the influence of technology acceptance, techno-invasion, and behavioral intention on the formation of Always-on Communication Demands (AOCD), as well as their impact on fatigue and Perceived Cognitive Failure (PCF), with After-Hours Boundary Norms (AHBN) serving as moderating variable. The study adopted an explanatory quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 364 formal white-collar workers using PLS-SEM via SmartPLS 4. The results indicate that Perceived Ease of Use has a positive effect on Perceived Usefulness and Behavioral Intention, while Perceived Usefulness also has a positive effect on Behavioral Intention. Techno-Invasion and Behavioral Intention have a positive effect on AOCD, while AOCD has a positive effect on fatigue. Fatigue, in turn, has a positive effect on PCF. The direct effect of ACD on PCF is not significant, but the indirect effect via fatigue is significant, making fatigue a key mechanism in explaining how ongoing communication demands are related to the perceived of cognitive failure. Meanwhile AHBN was not found to moderate the relationship between AOCD and fatigue. These findings suggest that the benefits and convenience of technology serves as a key pathway that shapes communication pressure and work-related fatigue.
