Abstract

The IKN Toll Road, specifically the Pulau Balang Bridge–Riko Interchange Section 5B, is part of the supporting toll road network for the Nusantara National Capital (IKN) in East Kalimantan Province. Along this section, several construction areas are located on soft soil that requires ground improvement, one of which is located at Sta. 3+550 to Sta. 3+650. According to the detailed design presented in the Revised Technical Approval (RTA) documents, the embankment in this area was originally planned to be constructed without any ground improvement treatment. Several alternative ground improvement methods can be applied to mitigate stability and settlement problems for road embankments constructed on soft soil, including soil substitution, Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD), and mini piles. In addition, embankment reinforcement methods, such as the use of geotextiles, can be employed to enhance embankment stability. The analysis results indicate that the initial design did not satisfy the required design criteria. The predicted settlement exceeded the allowable settlement limit. After evaluating several alternative methods, the most efficient and effective solution for mitigating settlement and stability problems was determined to be a 3 m deep soil substitution reinforced with geotextile. This alternative was selected based on its performance in terms of stability, settlement, construction cost, implementation time, and workability.
