Abstract

An analysis of electric vehicle adoption was conducted to examine the impact of differences in data time periods and vehicle types on adoption characteristics across various countries using the Bass Diffusion Model. Sales data for four-wheeled electric vehicles (E4W) as well as two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles (E2/3W) for the 2010–2024 period, sourced from the IEA Global EV Outlook 2025, were used to estimate the innovation (p) and imitation (q) coefficients. These parameters were then used to project sales through 2040 and to group countries using the hierarchical clustering method. The analysis results show that using a longer data range produces fairly significant changes in the parameters, marked by an increase in the value of p in 15 out of 20 countries and a decrease in the value of q in 18 out of 20 countries. These changes caused most countries to shift to clusters reflecting a higher level of adoption maturity. This indicates that the values of p and q are dynamic and influenced by policy developments and market conditions. Furthermore, adoption patterns also differ by vehicle type. In many Asian and developing countries, the E2/3W segment has a higher p-value than the E4W segment, resulting in distinct cluster characteristics for each segment. Therefore, market development strategies and electric vehicle policies need to be tailored to the specific vehicle type and conditions of each country.
