Abstract

Hydration heat is the heat generated by the reaction between cement and water during the concrete hardening process; large volumes of concrete can cause a significant rise in temperature, potentially leading to structural cracks that reduce the concrete’s strength and thus affect the final result. This study examines the effectiveness of using High Volume Fly Ash (HVFA) concrete as a means of controlling temperature rise in mass concrete structures and assesses the extent of the impact of this substitution in real-world mass concrete projects. This material comparison employs a numerical method based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) applied to a radiotherapy bunker structure. Prior to modeling and analysis, a control analysis must be conducted regarding the temperature rise of standard concrete used in the project (with a 5% error margin), the boundary conditions and convection within the project, as well as the temperature rise of the HVFA concrete to be compared. Replacing standard concrete with HVFA concrete shows that the peak temperature in the mass concrete can be reduced by 10%–15% for the B3-35_0.39 variation, 23%–25% for the B3-55_0.28 variant, 23%–25% for the B3B6-55_0.28 variant, and 22%–25% for the B3-50-LP-5_0.28 variant, while the peak hydration time can be delayed by 2 to 4 days. The cooling rate of HVFA concrete, which tends to take longer than that of ordinary concrete—due to the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash in the formation of secondary C-S-H chains—results in the temperature of HVFA concrete rising more slowly than that of ordinary SCC concrete. Replacing the material with HVFA concrete also reduced the stress value by 2.6% for the B3-35_0.39 variant, 26.8% for the B3-55_0.28 variant, 23.8% for the B3B6-55_0.28 variant, and 13.3% for the B3-50-LP-5_0.28 variant. The strain values observed in the HVFA concrete also decreased by 5.34% for the B3-35_0.39 variation, 29.85% for the B3-55_0.28 variation, 30.51% for the B3B6-55_0.28 variation, and 29.22% for the B3-50-LP-5_0.28 variant. The final results of this study demonstrate the significant impact of HVFA substitution on concrete performance in similar mass concrete cases to prevent cracking caused by thermal activity during the hydration reaction within the concrete core.
