Abstract

Coral reefs are among the most productive marine ecosystems and play a vital role as habitats for marine organisms, coastal protection, and the support of fisheries and tourism sectors. However, these ecosystems are experiencing severe degradation due to human activities and environmental changes, making rehabilitation efforts increasingly necessary. One rehabilitation approach is the use of artificial reef concrete incorporating Fly Ash and Bottom Ash (FABA) as a substrate for coral transplantation. Nevertheless, the application of FABA is constrained by its potential heavy metal content, which may pose environmental risks. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the growth response of transplanted A. muricataon artificial reef concrete made with FABA sourced from the Paiton Coal-Fired Power Plant (PLTU Paiton). The study began with the fabrication of artificial reef concrete using four FABA concentrations (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75%) as partial replacements for conventional concrete materials, resulting in thirteen treatment combinations (B1–B13). Fragments of A. muricata measuring approximately 10 cm in length were used as the experimental specimens. The axial corallite tips were removed prior to transplantation to stimulate the formation of new branches. Each treatment consisted of eight replicates. Growth performance was evaluated based on elongation rate and branching rate, which were measured monthly over a six-month period. The experiment employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), and the growth data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's post hoc test to determine significant differences among treatments. The results showed that treatments B1–B6 belonged to the same statistical group, producing growth responses comparable to the control treatment, whereas treatments B8–B13 differed significantly from the former group. A similar pattern was observed for branch formation, with B1–B6 showing branching responses comparable to the control and significantly higher than those of B8–B13.
