Abstract

Robusta coffee husk waste (Coffea canephora) is one of the abundant coffee production wastes in Indonesia and has the potential to be utilized because it contains a source of bioactive compounds, such as caffeine, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, and polyphenols that are known to have antimicrobial activity. Textiles are easily overgrown with mold, especially in humid conditions, making them susceptible to damage to the fiber structure and posing health risks. The use of synthetic antifungals in the textile industry can have negative impacts on the environment and health, so alternative natural antifungal materials that are environmentally friendly are needed. This study aims to test the potential of robusta coffee waste extract as an antifungal agent for textile-destroying fungi, namely Aspergillus sp. and Trichoderma sp. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method, namely the separation of compounds by soaking in 70% ethanol solvent. The antifungal test was carried out by observing the growth index on PDA media and the reduction in biomass on PDB media. The results of observations on PDA media showed that increasing the extract concentration can reduce the radial growth rate of both types of fungi. The inhibitory effect was more dominant against T. harzianum, which was characterized by inhibition of colony growth and sporulation, while A. niger showed a higher tolerance level. However, all treatments still achieved maximum growth diameter. These results indicate that the extract of robusta coffee fruit peel waste is more fungistatic than fungicidal. In PDB media, the administration of the extract actually increased fungal biomass. Thus, robusta coffee fruit peel waste extract at a concentration of 5%-15% was not able to optimally inhibit mycelial growth in liquid or solid media.
