Abstract

Oil spills in aquatic environments are one of the major forms of pollution that can degrade environmental quality and disrupt aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to design and develop a remote-controlled Oil Skimmer Boat equipped with a rotary drum mechanism and to evaluate the effect of drum rotational speed on oil recovery performance from the water surface. The experiments were conducted using three rotational speed variations, namely 12 RPM, 26 RPM, and 37 RPM, with three test materials: new engine oil, gasoline (Pertalite), and used engine oil. The evaluated parameters included the volume of recovered oil, the volume of water collected, the oil recovery percentage, and the oil recovery rate during a 20-minute testing period. The results showed that the rotary drum speed and fluid characteristics significantly affected the system performance. The highest oil recovery volume for new engine oil was 340 mL at 37 RPM, while the highest recovery volume for used engine oil was 390 mL at 26 RPM. Meanwhile, gasoline (Pertalite) produced the lowest recovery volume, reaching only 40 mL. In terms of separation efficiency, the highest oil recovery percentages were achieved at 12 RPM, reaching 71% for new engine oil and 92% for used engine oil. These results indicate that the developed Oil Skimmer Boat is capable of effectively recovering oil from the water surface, while the rotary drum speed plays an important role in determining both the oil recovery capacity and the oil–water separation efficiency.
