Abstract

Along with the development of science, the number of universities and students in Indonesia continues to increase every year. The location of universities is not always strategically close to students' homes, causing many students to have to travel and live with relatives who live near the university, or in boarding houses to gain knowledge. Unfortunately, for some students who do not have relatives, they have no other choice but to live alone in a boarding house. However, the furniture provided in boarding rooms is often inadequate for students who need a decent and comfortable workspace for a smooth learning process during college. Therefore, this research was conducted to design furniture products that can support various activities of residents while living in a boarding house, from storing items, resting, working, or studying. By considering user needs, aesthetics, and the environmental conditions of the boarding room, products that can be adapted to these things have potential in the market, especially among boarding house owners and residents. The methodology used in this research includes a study of user activities and needs, a study of literature and journals related to modular adaptive furniture design, and field studies in several boarding houses. The study results were then used as the basis for a design that prioritizes adaptability, functionality, and aesthetics, aligning with trends and the interests of potential boarding house residents. The resulting design is a modular, adaptive furniture set for boarding rooms. It consists of seven modules: a bed, wardrobe, table, storage, shoe rack, and large and small storage modules. The configuration of this product set can be tailored to the needs and conditions of different boarding rooms.
