Abstract

The Drag Chain Conveyor (351CV01) in the Exhaust Gas Conditioning area of PT Semen Gresik’s Rembang plant was originally driven by an induction motor using the Direct-On-Line (DOL) method via a Motor Control Center (MCC). Following gearbox failure, the motor was replaced with a higher-capacity unit (45 kW) paired with a gearbox of a different ratio; consequently, the conveyor speed no longer met operational requirements, and the starting current posed a risk if the DOL method were retained. This report discusses the upgrade of the motor drive control system from DOL to a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) configuration using the SINAMICS G120. The methodology involved designing power and control wiring diagrams, configuring the drive via STARTER software, and modifying programs within the PLC and Electronic Control System (ECS). The results demonstrate that conveyor speed can be regulated as required—utilizing a fixed speed setting within the drive (approximately 1500 rpm) maintained by vector control—while starting current is effectively limited through soft-start functionality (a 20-second ramp) and current limiting (60 A). Motor operating conditions can be monitored in real-time via the ECS.
