Abstract

The global deficit of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), estimated to exceed one million tons per year, is a significant issue in food security due to declining marine fish stocks and the unsustainable environmental impacts of conventional fish oil use. Thraustochytrids, as heterotrophic marine protists, have the ability to accumulate lipids up to approximately 50% of their dry biomass, making them a potential alternative source of DHA. However, the high cost of commercial carbon substrates such as glucose remains a major obstacle in industrial-scale production. This study examines the use of industrial waste agar from Gracilaria sp. as a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative carbon source, considering that approximately 65–75% of the initial biomass of Gracilaria sp. generally becomes solid and liquid waste that has the potential to cause environmental pollution. This solid waste is processed through a hydrolysis process to convert complex polysaccharides into simple sugars that can be utilized by Thraustochytrids as a nutrient source. The research results show that the utilization of industrial waste can support the growth of Thraustochytrids biomass and produce DHA-rich lipids and value-added bioactive compounds, while increasing the efficiency of DHA production and supporting the implementation of a sustainable circular economy concept.
