Abstract

The energy transition in the maritime sector has encouraged the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel that is more environmentally friendly than conventional fuel oil due to its lower emissions of CO₂, NOₓ, and SOₓ. One implementation of this technology is the use of removable LNG ISO tanks on LNG-fueled container vessels, where the fuel supply process is carried out through direct replacement of LNG ISO tanks. This system consists of complex equipment arrangements, such as vaporizers, cryogenic valves, gas lines, and control systems, which require appropriate maintenance strategies to ensure operational safety and reliability. Failure of components within the LNG fuel system may result in operational disruptions, loss of propulsion power, and potential hazards to safety and the environment. This study aims to identify component consequences and develop maintenance strategies for the LNG fuel system of a container vessel in a systematic manner. The study was conducted using Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) data as the basis for developing the asset register, followed by the establishment of technical hierarchy and functional hierarchy to classify systems and equipment based on their operational functions. Subsequently, a consequence analysis was carried out using consequence classes based on the NORSOK Z-008 standard to determine the criticality level of each component. The identified component consequences were then used as the basis for developing maintenance strategies aligned with the risk level and operational requirements of the system. This approach is expected to produce a more effective, structured, and consequence-based maintenance strategy, thereby improving the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of LNG-fueled container vessels. Furthermore, this study is expected to serve as a reference for the development of maintenance management systems for natural gas fuel systems in the maritime sector.
