Abstract
Defect press mark adalah cacat visual pada permukaan plywood yang menyebabkan penurunan mutu atau downgrade sehingga menurunkan nilai jual produk. Pada objek amatan, defect press mark tercatat sebanyak 643 unit dari 6.210 unit produk cacat (10,35%) selama Maret 2025–Maret 2026 dan menjadi salah satu dari tiga defect dominan pada produksi plywood 18 mm berperekat MR. Meskipun perusahaan telah menerapkan standar operational procedure dan berbagai upaya pengendalian kualitas, defect press mark masih berulang hingga tahap final grading, menunjukkan bahwa akar penyebabnya belum teridentifikasi. Penelitian yang secara khusus mengendalikan defect press mark pada proses hot press plywood 18 mm juga masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pengendalian kualitas, mengidentifikasi akar penyebab, dan merumuskan rekomendasi perbaikan pada proses hot press menggunakan Six Sigma tahap Define, Measure, Analyze, dan Improve. Penelitian dilakukan pada perusahaan plywood di Jawa Timur menggunakan data observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan data perusahaan, dengan alat analisis SIPOC, diagram Pareto, check sheet, p-chart, perhitungan DPMO dan sigma level, fishbone diagram, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, serta 5W+1H 5W+1H (What, Why, Where, When, Who, dan How). Hasil menunjukkan proses belum terkendali secara statistik dengan tujuh titik di luar batas kendali p-chart, rata-rata defects per million opportunities 15.426,83 dengan sigma level 3,78. Penyebab risiko tertinggi adalah kurangnya ketelitian memeriksa kebersihan veneer sebelum hot press (RPN 448). Rekomendasi meliputi checklist verifikasi kebersihan veneer, pembagian tanggung jawab kebersihan, checkpoint pembersihan material, checklist dan standarisasi pembersihan platen, serta standarisasi kriteria pemeriksaan visual.

Press mark defect is a surface defect in plywood that causes product quality degradation, resulting in product downgrading and reduced selling value. At the observed company, press mark defect accounted for 643 units out of 6,210 defective products (10.35%) during the period from March 2025 to March 2026, making it one of the three most dominant defects in the production of 18 millimeter plywood bonded with melamine urea formaldehyde adhesive. Although the company has implemented standard operating procedures and various quality control measures, press mark defect continues to recur until the final grading stage, indicating that its root causes have not yet been identified. Studies specifically addressing the control of press mark defect in the hot press process of 18 millimeter plywood remain limited. This study aims to analyze quality control practices, identify the root causes of press mark defect, and formulate improvement recommendations for the hot press process using the Define, Measure, Analyze, and Improve stages of the Six Sigma methodology. The study was conducted at a plywood manufacturing company in East Java using observation, interviews, documentation, and company production data. The analysis employed the Supplier, Input, Process, Output, Customer diagram, Pareto diagram, check sheet, proportion control chart, Defects per Million Opportunities, sigma level, fishbone diagram, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, and the 5W1H approach (What, Why, Where, When, Who, and How). The results indicate that the production process was not statistically under control, as evidenced by seven points outside the control limits on the proportion control chart, an average of 15,426.83 Defects per Million Opportunities, and an average sigma level of 3.78. The highest-risk cause was insufficient thoroughness in inspecting veneer cleanliness before the hot press process, with a Risk Priority Number of 448. The proposed improvement recommendations include a veneer cleanliness verification checklist, assignment of cleaning responsibilities, material cleaning checkpoints, a platen cleaning checklist and standardization, and standardized criteria for visual inspection.
