Abstract

Correct recitation of the Quran in accordance with Tajwid rules is essential, both as a ritual practice and for preserving its meaning and authenticity. In practice, correcting recitation errors is typically performed by experts, such as teachers or religious scholars (ulama). Machine learning technology can serve as a repository to encapsulate correct recitation rules established by experts, providing a benchmark to validate recitations. The application of supervised and unsupervised learning methods is common in speech and pronunciation detection across various languages, including Arabic, with a specific focus on Quranic recitation. However, the learning process frequently encounters challenges regarding data quality and quantity, particularly in supervised learning methods, which require a substantial amount of labeled data. Consequently, unsupervised learning methods such as Autoencoders present strong potential for anomaly detection without requiring explicit labels.
In recent developments, Autoencoder extensions such as the Variational Autoencoder (VAE) have shown solid performance in anomaly detection, including within Quranic recitation. This study proposes the integration of residual blocks into the encoder and decoder components of the VAE architecture to deepen acoustic feature representations while mitigating performance degradation in deeper models. The Residual Variational Autoencoder (Res-VAE) is applied to audio recordings of recitations processed into Log-Mel Spectrogram and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features, which serve as inputs to test the anomaly detection model.
Experimental results demonstrate that Res-VAE generally yields superior reconstruction error compared to two baseline methods, achieving a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.03502, a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.14794, and a Mean Root Square Error (MRSE) of 0.18713. Across 18 experimental scenarios, Res-VAE consistently exhibits better reconstruction values and demonstrates effective performance as a method for detecting anomalies in Quranic recitation.
