Abstract

The use of B100 biodiesel as an alternative fuel has continued to grow due to its renewable nature, biodegradability, and lower environmental impact compared with conventional petroleum diesel. However, the higher oxygen content, polarity, and oxidation susceptibility of biodiesel may accelerate lubricant degradation through oxidation, fuel dilution, and acidic compound formation, leading to increased engine component wear and deterioration of diesel engine performance. This study aimed to investigate the effect of adding 5% olive oil as an additive to Mesran SAE 40 lubricant on lubricant characteristics and the performance of a diesel engine fueled with B100 biodiesel. The experiment was conducted using a single-cylinder Yanmar TF85-MH diesel engine for 200 operating hours based on the Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) durability test procedure. The lubricant properties evaluated included viscosity, Total Base Number (TBN), wear metal content, water content, and oxidation level, while engine performance was assessed in terms of power, torque, and Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC). The results showed that the addition of 5% olive oil improved lubricant stability, with a viscosity reduction of 21,6%, compared with a 34,08% reduction in the lubricant without additives. The additive-treated lubricant also maintained a higher TBN after the durability test, while the iron (Fe) wear metal concentration decreased significantly from 376 ppm to 93 ppm, indicating reduced engine component wear. In terms of engine performance, the lubricant containing olive oil increased the average torque and power by 40% and reduced the average SFOC, indicating more efficient fuel utilization than the lubricant without additives. Overall, the results demonstrate that the addition of 5% olive oil to Mesran SAE 40 lubricant improves lubricant characteristics by enhancing viscosity stability, maintaining the lubricant’s neutralizing capability as reflected by TBN, and reducing engine wear. Furthermore, the olive oil additive positively affects the performance of diesel engines fueled with B100 biodiesel by increasing power and torque while decreasing SFOC. Therefore, the addition of 5% olive oil is proven to be effective in improving lubrication quality, slowing lubricant degradation during 200 hours of engine operation, and enhancing the efficiency and reliability of diesel engines operating on B100 biodiesel.
