Abstract

CO2 and CH4 emissions from non conventional diesel-engine vessels at Kenjeran Beach, Surabaya, have not been widely measured directly due to the limited availability of portable, low-cost, and easy-to apply measuring instruments. This study develops a gas analyzer prototype based on an ESP32 microcontroller, using an NDIR sensor for CO2 and a MOS MQ-4 sensor for CH4, equipped with a gas sampling system, air pump, LCD, and power supply, calibrated against the emission testing instrument at the MPP Laboratory. Calibration results show a reading deviation of 1.26-1.89% and an emission factor difference of 8.16–11.01%, while CH4 still shows an error of 21.69-34.09%, indicating it is not yet suitable for use without a correction factor. The measured emission data were used to establish the Baseline Actual Value (BAV) under Business As Usual (BAU) conditions, namely 15,515.78 kg CO2/year and 3.164 kg CH4/year for B0 fuel. The selection of alternative fuels B0, B35, and B40 was carried out using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and TOPSIS methods based on five technical economic environmental criteria, resulting in B40 as the best alternative with the highest closeness coefficient of 0.904. Emission comparison using Tank to Wake Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) shows that B40 provides the largest reduction in CO2e emission intensity, namely 4.36% (GWP20) and 4.39% (GWP100) relative to B0. These results indicate that B40 biodiesel substitution is statistically effective but inadequate as a standalone decarbonization strategy for the maritime sector, so additional interventions beyond fuel substitution are needed.
