Abstract

Bird strike is a collision between birds and aircraft during takeoff or landing and has become a significant threat to aviation safety. Juanda International Airport is one of Indonesia's major air transportation infrastructures with a high potential for bird strike incidents due to the surrounding wetland habitats, which attract waterbirds such as the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and the Eastern Cattle Egret (Ardea coromanda). These species have been identified as having the highest potential to contribute to bird strike incidents at Juanda International Airport. This study aimed to determine the daily behavioral patterns of these species, including foraging, resting, and flying behaviors, and to examine the relationship between the frequency of flying activity of the Little Egret and the Eastern Cattle Egret and the potential occurrence of bird strikes at Juanda International Airport. The study was conducted at the East Pond and the Runway 10 End Area using scan sampling and ad libitum sampling methods during the observation period from December 2025 to March 2026. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively, while the relationship between flying activity frequency and bird strike data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation test. The results showed that the Little Egret exhibited daily behavioral patterns predominantly characterized by flying activity at both study sites. In contrast, the Eastern Cattle Egret displayed more variable behavioral patterns, with flying behavior predominating at the East Pond and foraging behavior predominating at the Runway 10 End Area. The activities of both species during the morning, midday, and afternoon generally consisted of flying and foraging behaviors. The relationship between the frequency and flight patterns of both species and the potential occurrence of bird strikes was not statistically significant based on Pearson's correlation analysis. Nevertheless, both species were frequently observed performing crossing flights that intersected aircraft movement paths and flying parallel to aircraft along the runway and taxiway. Therefore, their flight movement patterns within aircraft operational areas are still considered to have the potential to contribute to bird strike occurrences at Juanda International Airport.
