Abstract

Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) is a gaseous fuel that exhibits characteristics similar to those of natural gas. Natural gas is one of Indonesia’s primary energy sources, and its role is projected to become increasingly strategic toward 2050, particularly in supporting the industrial sector, power generation, and national energy demand during the energy transition period. Indonesia’s natural gas demand in 2050 is estimated to reach approximately 23 million tons per year, thereby necessitating energy supply diversification to ensure sustainability and national energy security. One viable alternative is the production of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) from low rank coal (LRC), which possesses properties comparable to conventional natural gas and is abundantly available in Indonesia. Accordingly, a Synthetic Natural Gas plant utilizing low rank coal is designed with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year, which is expected to meet approximately 0.5% of Indonesia’s projected natural gas demand in 2050. The plant is planned to be located in the Maloy Batuta Trans Kalimantan Special Economic Zone (SEZ), East Kalimantan, considering raw material availability, supporting infrastructure, and product distribution accessibility. The main processes of the plant include coal pre-treatment to reduce moisture content and enhance reactivity, gasification to convert coal into synthesis gas (syngas), gas cleaning to remove impurities such as particulates and sulfur compounds, and methanation to convert syngas into Synthetic Natural Gas with high methane purity. Based on the process design results, low rank coal with a mass flow rate of 165,489.24 kg/h is processed through the integrated process units to produce 12,626.26 kg/h of SNG as the main product, along with by-products in the form of 2,316.85 kg/h of ash and slag generated from the gasification unit. The specifications of all products meet the required standards and are suitable for commercialization, and the SNG plant utilizing low rank coal is technically feasible. Economic analysis indicates that the project requires an estimated Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of IDR 629,893,729,244 and an annual Operational Expenditure (OPEX) of IDR 488,982,456,304, with a plant lifetime of 15 years and a loan repayment period of 10 years. The economic evaluation results in an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 15.05%, a Pay Out Time (POT) of 6.4 years, a Break Even Point (BEP) of 39.50%, and a positive Net Present Value (NPV) of IDR 267,355,222,143. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Synthetic Natural Gas plant from low rank coal with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year is technically and economically feasible and has the potential to support Indonesia’s future natural gas demand.
