Abstract

Literacy is an essential foundation for improving the quality of human resources and fostering a culture of lifelong learning. Although Indonesia's Reading Interest Index has continued to improve, the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 reported that the country's literacy performance remains below the global average. In addition, the Open Monograph Service Area at the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, as a public literacy space, still faces several challenges, including inadequate activity zoning, unclear spatial orientation, and suboptimal signage, wayfinding, and learning space diversity. In response to these issues, this study aims to develop an interior redesign proposal for the Open Monograph Service Area of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia by applying the Multi-Purpose Learning Modes concept with a Proxemics approach to accommodate various literacy activities. The design employs a Human-Centered Design approach through the Design Thinking process, integrating user needs into the development of spatial programming, layout planning, interior elements, furniture, as well as signage and wayfinding systems. The proposed design is expected to provide an alternative approach for developing library service spaces that are more responsive to user needs, support diverse literacy activities, and reinforce the identity of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia as a public learning space.
