Abstract

As populations age, public space needs to move beyond physical accessibility to support active aging in place. In this context, maintaining a sense of spatial, sensory, and social memory is required to reinforce orientation, familiarity, everyday routines and social participation. The design project ground on Concept-based Framework explores how spatial knowledge around aging, memory and disorientation can be contextualized as a broader design lens for public space. Based on the big idea of Architecture as Memory, it aims to formulate design criteria that support belonging and participation in designing public community hub. While Neuroarchitecture serves as a broader theoretical background, Lost in Space provides a more specific user-oriented understanding of safety, familiarity, navigability and sociability principles. Those principles are explored and synthesized through precedent analysis and field study, then translated into formal and spatial design. FFamiliar characteristics of kampung spatiality therefore inform the massing exploration through distributed and irregular building forms. Kampung spatial patterns and everyday activities further shape the activity clusters, recognizable routes, interconnected shortcuts, pause pockets, active landscapes, and a market-based program that integrates social, productive, recreational, and community activities. These strategies support continuous movement, repeated everyday experiences, informal interaction, and participation across generations. The design positions public space as a testing ground for principles derived from a user-specific lens while remaining inclusive to a broader population. Architecture as Memory therefore functions as the central design idea for shaping a public community hub in support of active aging in place.

Seiring dengan bertambahnya usia populasi, ruang publik perlu melampaui pemenuhan aksesibilitas fisik untuk mendukung active aging in place. Keberlanjutan memori spasial, sensorik, dan sosial diperlukan untuk memperkuat orientasi, familiaritas, rutinitas sehari-hari, serta partisipasi sosial. Berlandaskan Concept-based Framework, proyek ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana pengetahuan mengenai penuaan, memori, dan disorientasi dapat dikontekstualisasikan sebagai lensa perancangan ruang publik. Melalui gagasan Architecture as Memory, perancangan bertujuan merumuskan kriteria desain yang mendukung rasa memiliki dan partisipasi dalam sebuah public community hub. Neuroarsitektur menjadi landasan teoretis yang lebih luas, sedangkan Lost in Space memberikan pemahaman berorientasi pengguna mengenai keselamatan, familiaritas, kemudahan navigasi, dan sosiabilitas. Prinsip-prinsip tersebut disintesis melalui analisis preseden dan studi lapangan, kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam desain formal dan spasial. Karakter spasial kampung mengarahkan eksplorasi massa melalui susunan bangunan tersebar dan tidak beraturan, sekaligus membentuk klaster aktivitas, rute yang mudah dikenali, jalan pintas, kantong jeda, lanskap aktif, dan program berbasis pasar. Strategi ini mendukung pergerakan berkesinambungan, pengalaman keseharian berulang, interaksi informal, dan partisipasi antargenerasi. Dengan demikian, Architecture as Memory menjadi gagasan utama dalam membentuk public community hub yang inklusif dan mendukung active aging in place.
