Abstract

The efficiency of Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels in tropical regions is frequently hindered by elevated operational temperatures, which reduce the open-circuit voltage and trigger material degradation. This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance of a finned cooling plate (fin cold plate) by comparing aluminum and copper materials, alongside variations in the cooling media using distilled water and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanofluid with a 1% volume concentration. The analysis was conducted through numerical Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using ANSYS Fluent software. The tests were executed by applying thermal loads in the form of a constant heat flux of 700 W/m² and a fixed panel surface temperature of 60°C, simulated at flow rates of 3, 5, and 7 L/min. The simulation results prove that the copper plate demonstrates superior thermal extraction capabilities compared to aluminum, and the utilization of ZnO nanofluid is proven to drastically boost heat transfer compared to pure water. The most optimal cooling performance is absolutely achieved by the combination of the copper plate and ZnO nanofluid at a maximum flow rate of 7 L/min. In the simulation under heat flux conditions, this optimal configuration yields an overall heat transfer coefficient ($U_{eff}$) of 557.20 W/m²K, with the heat transfer effectiveness peaking at 0.9811. Meanwhile, in the test under fixed temperature conditions, this configuration recorded a $U_{eff}$ value of 142.42 W/m²K, with the highest total heat transfer rate reaching 7,685.2 W.
