Abstract

Critical Regionalism, as defined by Kenneth Frampton, is an architectural approach that posits an arrière-garde stance aimed at mediating the impact of "Universal Civilization" (global technique) upon "Local Culture." This approach seeks to resist placelessness, climate, and tactile experience over the domination of the visual. However, in the 21st century, this theory has faced significant criticism. Scholars such as Keith L. Eggener warn that Critical Regionalism risks "freezing" local culture into a static, romanticized image for external consumption. Furthermore, Giamarelos argues that to remain relevant, the theory must evolve to address contemporary issues, particularly ecological sustainability. This research, therefore, employs Critical Regionalism as its primary theoretical lens. This lens is utilized to observe a phenomenon articulated in Ricoeur's Paradox. This observation directs the site selection to Kuta, Lombok, where "Universal Civilization" (the tourism industry) collides with "Local Culture" (the maritime culture of the Sasak people). The primary architectural challenge identified is the absence of mediating infrastructure capable of managing this cultural collision. The role of this architectural design is to propose a "filter" functioning as an arrière-garde (rear guard) for the local culture. Through a bottom-up analysis of cultural patterns and the site environment, this research identifies three main categories of spatial requirements: Productive Space to protect and elevate the authentic economic activities of the local community; Recreational Space to facilitate public interaction for both local and non-local users; and Filter/Mediation Space to manage the programmatic interface between the two.
