Abstract

Traditional markets are vital entities that serve as economic transaction hubs as well as arenas for social interaction and the preservation of cultural values. However, physical building revitalization often results in sterile spaces that lose their local identity. Pasar Banyuasri in Buleleng Regency, Bali, faced post-revitalization issues after 2021. These issues were characterized by a decline in tourist visits, visitor spatial disorientation, obstructed corridor circulation due to accumulated merchandise stock, a lack of comfort facilities and kiosk ergonomics, as well as a fading sense of place unique to North Bali. This study formulates an interior redesign for the 1st floor of Pasar Banyuasri through a Neo-Vernacular approach to bridge modern commercial space requirements with local wisdom. The design methodology utilized is the Design Thinking framework, which comprises five stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Spatial solutions are realized through the integration of the traditional Sanga Mandala concept (a 9-zone matrix) adapted to Singaraja's geographical orientation to neatly segregate commodity hierarchies and prevent the mixing of odors and waste. Circulation improvements were achieved by widening the corridors and ergonomically redesigning the trading tables, equipping them with integrated lower storage space. Buleleng's cultural identity is reinforced through the application of distinctive aesthetic elements—such as Don Semangka, Patra Punggel, and Swastika carving motifs, alongside Buleleng Endek woven textiles—applied to structural pillars, wayfinding systems, furniture, and planter boxes. The redesign results successfully transformed the 1st-floor interior of Pasar Banyuasri into an efficient public space that represents Buleleng's contemporary identity. The final validation test conducted with traders and visitors using the Customer Satisfaction Index method achieved a score of 93.17% (categorized as "Very Satisfied"), proving that the proposed design solutions effectively resolve circulation and ergonomic issues while reviving the market's cultural tourism appeal.
