Abstract

Dengan menggunakan *concept-based framework* (Plowright), gagasan utama *Architecture as an Ecosystem* ditransformasikan menjadi sembilan prinsip spasial melalui proses *domain-to-domain transfer*, kemudian diimplementasikan melalui metode *Ecological Design* dan *Biomimicry*.

Abandoned industrial sites are a spatial manifestation of the failure of the anthropocentric urban planning paradigm, which reduces nature to a mere commodity. This condition creates *dead zones* that trigger social fragmentation and ecological degradation. The former Rosella Jute Sack Factory of PTPN XI, located at Jalan Ngagel Timur No. 37, Surabaya, occupying approximately 15,000 m² and abandoned since 1998, represents a concrete example of this issue. This project responds to the problem through the *Ecocentric Placemaking* approach, representing a paradigmatic shift toward the *Symbiocene* era (Albrecht), in which humans coexist symbiotically with nature. Using Plowright’s *concept-based framework*, the central concept of *Architecture as an Ecosystem* is transformed into nine spatial principles through a *domain-to-domain transfer* process and implemented using *Ecological Design* and *Biomimicry* methods. The design results in a Productive Community Center comprising four building masses with a total floor area of 7,365.5 m², accommodating production, education, and collaboration programs centered on Surabaya’s urban farming communities. A *No Endpoint* utility system, incorporating *rainwater harvesting* and *biofilter tanks*, establishes a closed-loop water cycle, while rib-inspired biomimicry is applied to the intervention building masses. This project demonstrates that an ecocentric paradigm can be operationalized architecturally by transforming a dead zone into a living, productive, and meaningful ecosystem.
