Abstract

A community museum is a place for storage and display of collections and also a means to create links between objects, memories, the community and the context of a particular place. The design of the Vespa Community Museum in Kota Lama Semarang responds to the need for a museum that presents Vespa as a cultural object while also showing the social practices of the Vespa community. The main design challenge is to turn ideas from architectural phenomenology into a strategy that guides how people find their way, experience spaces, and feel a sense of identity in a community museum set in a heritage area. This design is aimed at creating a museum that does not only tell stories through its exhibits but also creates new relationships between Vespa, the community, visitors and Kota Lama Semarang.. The methods used include the Concept-Based Framework as the design thinking structure, the Spatial Sequencing Approach to organize the sequence of spatial experience, and the Contextual Method to read the relationship between the design, the heritage setting, Vespa as an object, and community activities. The phenomenological theory of Norberg-Schulz can be interpreted with four basic components: center, boundary, path and domain. The final design proposes a Vespa Community Museum with a plaza as the main orientation center, transitional spaces as boundaries, an exhibition route based on the development of Vespa as a narrative path, and spatial domains divided into exhibition, community, public, and service areas. This design shows that phenomenology can be used as a design framework to create a community museum that is oriented, contextual, and has a clear spatial identity within a heritage area.
