Abstract

The development of architectural discourse has expanded the understanding of space beyond the arrangement of physical elements to a medium that constructs experience and meaning. Psarra (2009), through narrative architecture, explains that architectural experience is established through the relationship between conceptual structure, spatial configuration, perceptual experience, and meaning, where narrative functions as the underlying structure that organizes spatial relationships. In the design process, the Atmosphere approach is employed to reinforce the intended narrative by shaping spatial qualities through the manipulation of materials, lighting, proportions, and other architectural elements. The design adopts the concept-based framework with domain-to-domain transfer as the principal tool for systematically transforming the conceptual structure of a phenomenon into architectural concepts. The resulting transformation serves as the basis for formulating design principles, design criteria, and the development of spatial and formal concepts. This approach is implemented by interpreting the Lapindo Mud phenomenon through the typology of an educational museum. The design outcome demonstrates that the transformed phenomenon is translated into a spatial narrative through spatial organization, spatial configuration, architectural form transformation, and the application of atmosphere to support spatial experience. The proposed Lapindo Mud Museum functions as an educational medium that communicates the phenomenon through an architectural narrative.
