Abstract

Architecture is often simplified into geometric shapes and passive mechanical functions, yet it has a profound capacity to organize living spaces and shape the emotional states of its inhabitants. Through Gernot Böhme's concept of atmospheric architecture with the concept of Object Ecstasy, the material elements of architecture act as triggers of atmospheric radiation to recreate the intimacy of space. This approach is combined with the theory of proximity and the phenomenon of place attachment to address the problem of temporary evacuation sites on Mount Merapi, which often rob residents of their everyday atmosphere, thus triggering feelings of isolation and psychological crisis in emergency isolation. By utilizing the everyday atmosphere in the underground facility, the ecstatic radiation of material elements maintains the collective memory and psychological sovereignty of the survivors. This concept is expressed in the outer shell of a diagonal prism clad in andesite stone with sloping walls that act aerodynamically to break the flow of hot clouds and dissolve the pile of volcanic ash. Inside, the atmosphere is expressed in seven adjacent areas connected by seamless circular ramps: from the entrance and disinfected corridors equipped with disinfection rooms, an emergency center, to a public plaza equipped with natural lighting in the main space that resembles a village square. The spatial experience is enhanced by bedroom units on multiple floors that guarantee privacy, a reflection pool as a spiritual healing space, and an independent utility center based on a closed system. This design demonstrates that adaptive architecture can transform from a passive fortress into a spatial ecosystem that recreates the atmosphere of everyday life, enhances psychological resilience, and maintains a community's cultural identity in the face of disaster.
