Abstract

Indonesia, as one of the largest coconut producers in the world, holds significant potential in developing coconut-based industries. However, the utilization of coconut coir remains suboptimal and tends to have low added value, often being treated as waste or processed only into simple products. In fact, coconut coir possesses structural characteristics and natural textures that offer potential for development as an alternative material, particularly in composite form. Current developments still rely heavily on synthetic resins, which may reduce the sustainability value of the material.
This study aims to explore the development of coconut coir-based biocomposite materials using natural binders, as well as to examine their application in product design, specifically for audio devices in hospitality settings. An exploratory approach is conducted through material testing and evaluation of physical characteristics, considering both acoustic potential and aesthetic value. The results of this study are expected to provide alternative, higher-value applications for coconut coir while supporting the development of sustainable materials in interior design.
