Abstract

Industri kafe di Indonesia mendorong kebutuhan akan furnitur yang tidak hanya memenuhi aspek fungsional, tetapi juga mampu menghadirkan nilai estetika yang selaras dengan karakter ruang. Salah satu material yang memiliki potensi untuk dikembangkan adalah birch plywood, karena memiliki karakter visual berupa warna alami, tekstur permukaan, dan lapisan yang khas. Namun, pada praktiknya material plywood masih lebih banyak dimanfaatkan sebagai material struktural atau ditutupi dengan lapisan finishing. Penelitian ini bertujuan merancang lounge chair dan coffee table berbahan birch plywood yang mampu mengeksplorasi karakter estetika material sekaligus meningkatkan apresiasi pengguna terhadap material plywood yang diekspos. Metode penelitian yang digunakan meliputi studi literatur, observasi, wawancara, benchmarking, analisis ergonomi dan antropometri, analisis material, serta pengembangan konsep desain. Hasil perancangan berupa satu set furnitur kafe dengan konsep honest material, relaxed, dan natural, yang diwujudkan melalui eksplorasi warna serat kayu, tekstur permukaan, dan edge plywood sebagai identitas visual utama produk. Perancangan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi alternatif pengembangan furnitur kafe berbahan plywood sekaligus meningkatkan apresiasi terhadap nilai estetika material plywood dalam industri furnitur lokal.

The growth of the café industry in Indonesia has increased the demand for furniture that not only fulfills functional requirements but also offers aesthetic value in harmony with the character of the space. One material with significant potential for furniture development is birch plywood, which possesses distinctive visual characteristics, including its natural wood grain, smooth surface texture, and exposed layered edges. However, in practice, plywood is still predominantly used as a structural material or covered with finishing layers, limiting the appreciation of its natural appearance. This study aims to design a lounge chair and coffee table made of birch plywood by exploring the material's aesthetic characteristics while enhancing users' appreciation of exposed plywood. The research methods include literature review, observation, interviews, benchmarking, ergonomic and anthropometric analysis, material analysis, and design concept development. The design outcome is a café furniture set based on the concepts of honest material, relaxed, and natural, expressed through the exploration of the natural wood grain, surface texture, and exposed plywood edges as the product's primary visual identity. This design is expected to provide an alternative approach to plywood café furniture design while promoting greater appreciation of the aesthetic value of plywood within the local furniture industry.
