Abstract

Architecture in Indonesia has always been connected to the representation of identity, power relations, and foreign cultural influence. In the contemporary context, Hallyu has developed as a transnational flow of popular culture with strong visibility in Indonesia through media, consumption, and fandom activities. The architectural problem does not lie in the public acceptance of Hallyu, but in design responses that stop at the direct use of Korean visual signs, which may reduce cultural identity to thematic images. This project proposes a concert venue to accommodate concerts, fan meetings, fan gatherings, and other fandom-based activities, while exploring the negotiation between Indonesian and Korean architectural references. The design process uses a Force-Based Framework to identify cultural influence, context, users, and the technical requirements of the concert venue. Semiotics is used to examine the forms, meanings, functions, and contexts of selected Nusantara and Korean architectural references, while operative design is used to transform the selected principles through changes in scale, arrangement, orientation, and relationships between elements. Hybridity is positioned as a process that develops cultural repetition into new meanings and architectural relationships. The design results show that cultural negotiation is expressed through the separation of user hierarchies and circulation, the transformation of Nusantara linear organization and Palgakjeong centrality into a radial massing system, the development of Nusantara roof and structural principles together with hanok modularity into a contemporary large-span structure, and the recomposition of Kawung and Wanjasal patterns as visual facade articulation. Therefore, Hallyu-related cultural influence is translated through contextual architectural transformation rather than direct visual imitation.
