Abstract

Modernization in Indonesian cities often treats kampungs as obsolete environments to be cleared and replaced through redevelopment. In this process, what is lost is not only the physical settlement but also the spatial patterns, everyday rituals, and social relations that sustain community life. This final project examines how architecture can respond to obsolescence as a spatial problem without reproducing the logic of total erasure or static preservation. Drawing on Cairns and Jacobs’ Buildings Must Die, the research understands obsolescence and endings as inevitable conditions of architecture that must be confronted rather than denied. In this final project, architectural death is understood as spatial obsolescence: a condition in which space can no longer support changing functions, needs, environmental conditions, and patterns of life. At the same time, the research engages Habraken’s theory of continuous transformation and open building, which understands the built environment as a layered system capable of renewal through incremental change. Using Muara Angke as the design context, this final project develops a temporal design framework through scenario-based design and open building principles. The proposed design operates as an (Im)permanent architectural system. In this way, architecture is positioned as a temporal framework that allows space to remain usable, changeable, and reinterpretable according to the evolving needs of kampung life.

Modernisasi di Indonesia sering kali memandang kampung sebagai lingkungan yang usang dan perlu dibersihkan serta digantikan melalui proyek redevelopment. Dalam proses tersebut, yang hilang bukan hanya bentuk fisik permukiman, tetapi juga pola ruang, ritual keseharian, serta relasi sosial yang menopang kehidupan komunitas. Tugas akhir ini mengkaji bagaimana arsitektur dapat merespons obsolescence kampung sebagai persoalan spasial, tanpa mereproduksi logika penghapusan total maupun pelestarian secara statis. Mengacu pada pemikiran Cairns dan Jacobs dalam Buildings Must Die, rancangan ini memahami obsolescence dan akhir (endings) sebagai kondisi tak terhindarkan dalam arsitektur. Dalam tugas akhir ini, kematian arsitektur dipahami sebagai spatial obsolescence, yaitu kondisi ketika ruang tidak lagi mampu mendukung fungsi, kebutuhan, kondisi lingkungan, dan pola hidup yang terus berubah. Penelitian ini juga mengacu pada teori transformasi berkelanjutan dan Open Building dari Habraken, yang memandang lingkungan binaan sebagai sistem berlapis yang dapat diperbarui melalui perubahan bertahap. Dengan menggunakan Muara Angke sebagai konteks perancangan, tugas akhir ini mengembangkan kerangka desain temporal melalui pendekatan scenario-based design dan prinsip open building. Desain yang diusulkan beroperasi sebagai sistem arsitektur (Im)permanen. Dengan demikian, arsitektur tidak lagi diposisikan sebagai objek statis, melainkan sebagai kerangka temporal untuk merancang bersama kematian dengan mempertahankan kontinuitas kehidupannya.
