Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of soil nailing as a reinforcement method for deep excavations, which is widely used to improve the stability of deep excavation slopes in cohesive soils. The study was conducted at STA 205+575 of the Rengat–Pekanbaru Toll Road, Pekanbaru Ring Road Section, where the subsurface consists of cohesive soils with low to medium plasticity and firm to stiff consistency. The study was motivated by the need to modify the original slope design due to the construction of a frontage road and the limited right of way (ROW), requiring a steeper slope inclination of 2V:1H and the implementation of a slope reinforcement system. The analysis was conducted by varying the nail lengths to 15 m, 17 m, and 19 m, with installation angles of 10°, 20°, and 30°. The slope stability was evaluated using the Safety Factor (SF) under three loading conditions: the construction stage, long-term service condition, and seismic condition. The results indicate that the unreinforced slope failed to satisfy the required stability criteria under long-term service conditions, although it met the requirements during the construction stage and under seismic loading. All soil nailing configurations significantly improved the Safety Factor and satisfied the stability requirements for all loading conditions. The highest improvement in slope stability was achieved with a 19 m nail length, resulting in an SF increase ranging from 50.20% to 67.32%, while the 30° installation angle provided the greatest effectiveness compared with the 20° and 10° installation angles. However, considering both technical performance and construction cost, the soil nailing configuration with a 15 m nail length and a 30° installation angle was identified as the most effective and economical alternative for reinforcing the excavation slope at STA 205+575.
