Abstract
Meningkatnya kesadaran masyarakat terhadap isu keberlanjutan mendorong berkembangnya desain kemasan yang tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai pelindung produk, tetapi juga memberikan nilai tambah melalui penerapan prinsip ekonomi sirkular. Namun, kemasan sepeda berbahan karton pada umumnya masih menerapkan pola konsumsi linear, yaitu digunakan satu kali selama proses distribusi kemudian menjadi limbah, meskipun materialnya masih memiliki potensi guna yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan merancang kemasan sepeda berbasis ekonomi sirkular melalui pendekatan upcycling untuk mengoptimalkan siklus hidup material karton. Proses perancangan dilakukan melalui observasi proses distribusi dan unboxing, wawancara, analisis kebutuhan pengguna, studi ergonomi, analisis struktur, simulasi kekuatan, serta studi literatur mengenai sustainable packaging dan ekonomi sirkular. Perancangan menghasilkan kemasan sepeda yang mampu memenuhi fungsi utama sebagai pelindung selama distribusi sekaligus memiliki fungsi sekunder setelah masa penggunaan utama berakhir melalui transformasi menjadi produk lain yang dapat dirakit secara mandiri (do-it-yourself). Desain juga dilengkapi dengan sistem side loading, mekanisme twist lock, serta pola untuk memudahkan proses transformasi tanpa mengurangi kekuatan struktur kemasan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan konsep upcycling pada kemasan sepeda mampu memperpanjang siklus hidup material karton, meningkatkan nilai tambah produk, mengurangi potensi limbah kemasan, serta mendukung penerapan prinsip ekonomi sirkular dalam pengembangan desain kemasan yang lebih berkelanjutan.

Growing public awareness of sustainability issues has encouraged the development of packaging designs that not only protect products but also provide added value through the application of circular economy principles. However, cardboard bicycle packaging generally still follows a linear consumption pattern, being used only once during distribution before being discarded as waste, despite the material retaining significant functional value. This study aims to design bicycle packaging based on circular economy principles through an upcycling approach to optimize the life cycle of cardboard materials. The design process involved observations of distribution and unboxing activities, interviews, user needs analysis, ergonomic studies, structural analysis, strength simulations, and a literature review on sustainable packaging and the circular economy. The resulting design functions not only as protective packaging during distribution but also as a secondary product that can be assembled independently through a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach. The design incorporates a side-loading system, a twist-lock mechanism, and patterned guides to facilitate transformation without compromising structural strength. The findings demonstrate that applying an upcycling approach to bicycle packaging can extend the life cycle of cardboard materials, increase product added value, reduce packaging waste, and support the implementation of circular economy principles in sustainable packaging design.
