Abstract

Kabupaten Gresik memiliki potensi hasil laut yang melimpah, salah satunya berupa residu limbah cangkang kerang simping (Placuna Placenta) yang bervolume besar pada musim panen raya. Saat ini, pemanfaatan limbah tersebut mengalami inefisiensi (penurunan nilai guna) karena mayoritas hanya ditimbun, dijual mentah, dihancurkan untuk campuran pakan ternak, atau diolah menjadi produk kerajinan suvenir berskala rumah tangga dengan desain yang monoton. Padahal, material kerang simping memiliki potensi estetika eksotik yang tinggi berkat sifat optic semi-transparan yang mampu mendifusikan cahaya, struktur mikro kalsium karbonat yang berlapis, serta gradasi warna alami yang berkesan mewah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan upcycling dengan mentransformasi limbah cangkang kerang simping menjadi elemen dekoratif bernilai tambah tinggi pada perancangan furnitur aksen (accent furniture). Perancangan ini ditujukan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pasar komersial dan hospitality modern yang mengadopsi gaya contemporary organic serta kemewahan material alam (Nature Inspired Luxury). Metodologi perancangan mengaplikasikan Material Driven Design (MDD), sebuah pendekatan yang menempatkan material sebagai titik awal dalam proses eksplorasi pengolahan permukaan (surface treatment) melalui teknik komposit resin, modern inlay dan tiling yang diaplikasikan pada struktur pendukung kayu solid. Hasil akhir perancangan berupa konsep set meja kopi (coffee table) eksklusif yang berfungsi sebagai titik focus (focal point) ruangan. Solusi desain ini diharapkan dapat memberikan nilai tambah secara ekonomi pada limbah pesisir sekaligus menyediakan alternatif produk interior estetik bagi industri.

Gresik regency has a abundance of marine potential, one of which is a large volume of simping clam shell (Placuna Placenta) waste during the harvest season. Currently, the utilization of this waste experiences inefficiency (downcycling) because the majority is only hoarded, sold raw, crushed for animal feed mixtures, or processed into home-scale souvenir crafts with monotonous designs. In fact, the simping clam shell material has a high exotic aesthetic potential due to its semi-transparent optical properties capable of diffusing light, layered calcium carbonate microstructure, and natural color gradations that give a luxurious and timeless impression. This study aims to conduct upcycling by transforming simping clam shell waste into high-value decorative elements in accent furniture design.The design is intended to meet the needs of the modern commercial interior and hospitality market that adopts a contemporary organic style and Nature Inspired Luxury. The design methodology applies Material Driven Design (MDD), an approach that places material as the starting point in exploration and design process. To overcome the physical weaknesses of thin and brittle shells, this study explores surface treatments through resin composite techniques, modern inlay, and tiling applied to a solid wood support structure. The final design result is an exclusive coffee table set concept that functions as focal point in a room. This design solution is a expected to provide economic added value to coastal waste while providing alternative aesthetic interior products for the creative industry
