Abstract

Water hyacinth is an invasive aquatic plant that has mostly been utilized thru weaving techniques in handicraft products. The dominance of this approach indicates that the exploration of processing water hyacinth is still limited to conventional weaving forms. This research aims to explore the potential of processing water hyacinth into sheets as a basis for developing decorative lighting products. The method used is Material Driven Design (MDD) with the stages of understanding material, designing material, creating material, and manifesting material. Data collection was conducted thru literature studies, field observations, interviews, user perception questionnaires, and material experiments including forming, joining, material combination, and finishing. The research results show that water hyacinth sheets have lightweight, flexible, textured characteristics, and are capable of producing light interactions that are diffused and translucent. Based on the analysis of materials, ergonomics, and user needs, three product categories were developed: table lamps, pendant lamps, and wall lamps. The Light Thru Material design concept is applied to highlight the layering character, natural texture, and warm light quality produced by the water hyacinth material.
This research produces an alternative approach to processing water hyacinth beyond weaving techniques and demonstrates that sheets of water hyacinth have the potential to be applied in decorative lighting products by highlighting visual value, material texture, and spatial atmosphere. The innovation of this research lies in the development of water hyacinth material in sheet form combined with a cross-stitch joint technique as a connection system and an esthetic element, resulting in a new approach to utilizing water hyacinth beyond conventional weaving techniques.
