Abstract

Post-disaster relocation following the Lapindo mudflow disaster (2006) in Sidoarjo Regency should ideally not only provide replacement housing but also comprehensively restore the quality of life of affected communities. This study aims to evaluate changes in the quality of life of Lapindo disaster survivors after relocation and to analyze the factors causing stagnation and decline in quality of life based on residents' perceptions and experiences. The study employs a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, combining descriptive statistical analysis (quantitative) of 80 respondents using the WHOQOL-BREF framework with content analysis (qualitative) through semi-structured interviews assisted by NVivo software. The quantitative analysis was conducted by comparing conditions before and after relocation across the physical, psychological, social, and environmental dimensions, while the qualitative analysis was used to identify the factors influencing the decline in residents' quality of life. The research was conducted in Kahuripan Nirwana Village (KNV), Sidoarjo Regency, one of the main relocation sites for Lapindo disaster victims. The findings show that all quality-of-life dimensions improved compared to pre-relocation conditions, in the following order: Psychological (3.73), Environmental (3.65), Social (3.59), and Physical (3.41). Nevertheless, the Physical dimension was the most vulnerable, marked by stagnation in the energy and fatigue aspect (2.90), which is closely related to stagnation in financial resources within the Environmental dimension (2.88); within the same dimension, the quality of the natural environment also declined (2.40). The factors contributing to the decline in quality of life include Economic Shocks, Socio-Economic Anxiety, Work Fatigue, Environmental Dissatisfaction, Uncertainty over Burial Facilities, Livelihood Transition, Mobility Burden, and Decline in Social Relationship Quality. Overall, relocation has proven successful in restoring physical housing, but has not fully restored residents' economic and physical resilience, thereby giving rise to latent vulnerability. Academically, this study contributes by demonstrating that improvements in physical housing following relocation are not automatically followed by the restoration of residents' economic and physical resilience, thereby enriching the discourse on latentvulnerability in post-disaster relocation studies in Indonesia.
