Abstract

Sugarcane bagasse waste increases every year, so it must be processed properly to prevent environmental pollution. One of the products from utilizing sugarcane bagasse waste is adsorbent. Sugarcane bagasse is used as adsorbent because it has a high silica content, environmentally friendly, and has a high surface area. Sugarcane bagasse is processed into adsorbents with two processes, namely air atmospheric pyrolysis (SB@PO) and nitrogen atmospheric pyrolysis (SB@PN), both of adsorbent applied to reduce phosphate waste in water. Phosphate waste is hazardous and toxic waste because it promotes the growth of cyanobacteria which produce harmful toxics that can kill other organisms. Therefore, a phosphate waste treatment method is needed to reduce phosphate levels in wastewater. One of the most widely chosen treatment methods is the adsorption method, where adsorbent from sugarcane bagasse waste can be applied for phosphate waste. The adsorption process can take place optimally by optimizing parameters that affect adsorbent performance. Parameters that affect adsorption include: adsorbent mass, contact time, and initial concentration of phosphate solution. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is the optimization method that is able to explain the interaction between parameters with Box-Behnken Design (BBD) for phosphate adsorption optimization. Phosphate content was measured using Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV). The novelty of this study is the use of DPV as an alternative method for phosphate determination, which is more sensitive and efficient compared to spectrophomotery. The characterizations carried out include: FTIR, XRD, FESEM-EDX, XPS, and N2 adsorption-desorption. SB@PO produces materials with a crystalline structure and rich in silica while SB@PN produces materials rich in carbon and amorphous structure. The adsorption optimization results show that SB@PO is superior to SB@PN with each optimum condition for SB@PO with an adsorbent mass of 0.02 g; contact time of 21 minutes; and an initial concentration of 1.4 M with % removal and adsorption capacity of 95.97% and 43.48 mg/g with Langmuir isotherm rate and pseudo-second-order kinetics, while SB@PN was optimum at an adsorbent mass of 0.15 g; contact time of 66 minutes; and an initial concentration of 0.6 M with % removal and adsorption capacity of 65.75% and 2.2x10-4 mg/g with Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm rate and pseudo-first-order kinetics. In conclusion, SB@PO is effective as a phosphate adsorbent and DPV is proven to be an effective alternative method for phosphate determination.
