Abstract

Every vessel that undergoes a charge of function or conversion requiring structural modifications must continue to comply with the safety and strength requirements established by classification societies. The conversion of a barge into a life fish carrier result in changes to cargo arrangements, layout, as well as the addition and modification of several structural components. These change may potentially affect the longitudinal strength of the vessel. Based on the analysis results, the maximum longitudinal bending moments after the conversion were 3418 ton·m under loading condition I in the hogging condition −6411 ton·m under loading condition II in the sagging condition, and −15979 ton·m under loading condition III in the sagging condition. The analytical calculations yielded maximum stresses of 28.836 MPa, 54.086 MPa, and 134.806 MPa for loading conditions I, II, and III, respectively, while the numerical analysis using Ansys produced maximum stresses of 34.999 MPa, 53.868 MPa, and 152.960 MPa. All calculated stress values were below the BKI allowable stress of 161.490 MPa, indicating that the converted vessel satisfies the longitudinal strength requirements.
