Abstract
======================================================================================================================================
Juhani Pallasmaa’s theory of The Eyes of the Skin serves as the conceptual foundation for creating architecture experienced through all the senses, like sight, hearing, touch, and smell as well as the sense of space, thereby fostering a profound connection between body and place. Engaging the full spectrum of senses creates memorable spatial impressions imbued with meaning, as they are rooted in emotion and lived experience. The Trinil site in Ngawi Regency is a historically significant area in the story of human evolution, it is the location where Pithecanthropus erectus fossils and stone tools likely used for foraging in prehistoric times were discovered along the Bengawan Solo River, indicating that early humans lived in the river's vicinity. The river's abundant natural resources made it a viable habitat for early humans. Trinil holds immense potential to convey the significance of the relationship between humans, nature, and the geological processes that shaped the landscape. Consequently, The Eyes of the Skin theory is highly relevant to a design that evokes a sensory experience, allowing historical information to resonate deeply in people's memories. Sophia Psarra’s theory of Narrative Architecture is employed to structure a spatial journey that functions as a narrative, where spaces are designed as a sequence of stories linking the past to the present. Through a multisensory approach, the architecture transcends its role as a mere repository for artifacts; it allows for an experiential understanding of the site's context revealing why Homo erectus inhabited Trinil and how the environment shaped their evolution. The design's narrative is derived from an interpretation of human evolutionary history, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. This interpretation gives rise to the hypothesis of "Architecture as a Human Nature-Continuum," positing that humans are an extension of the natural world. This hypothesis shapes the narrative trajectory of the human journey in finding meaning within nature. Ultimately, by applying a design that positions nature as the medium through which humans interpret their existence utilizing both multisensory and narrative methods this project aims to strengthen the interconnectedness of architecture, nature, and history.
