Abstract

Architecture has a close relationship with the way humans live, feel, and recover. Every space created can influence the physical and psychological condition of its users. The shift in focus from viewing healing as a response from the immune system to understanding the body as a sensorium indicates a change in the understanding that the healing process is not only biomedical but also psychological and therapeutic. However, most social living environments still harbor a negative stigma toward psychiatric patients. This condition makes the living space unsupportive and hinders the reintegration process.
In this design, Healing Architecture is transformed into an inclusive and healing residential typology. The residence is designed as an atmospheric social environment that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, serving as an instrument of healing. This design uses a Force-Based Framework that begins with the theory of Healing Architecture and Stimulation-Arousal, resulting in four forces: user, sensory, habit, and activity, as well as privacy-exposure, which will influence design decisions. In the process, three methods were employed: participant observation, behavior mapping, and user-centered design to understand user behavior and formulate the appropriate design. By combining the theories of Healing Architecture and Stimulation-Arousal, this design is able to create an environment that balances sensory stimulation levels, thereby supporting the creation of a sense of safety, psychological comfort, and more optimal recovery. The sensory stimuli in this design are implemented through fragmented mass arrangements and support the experience of space through arousal transitions. In the end, the brain, body, and environment are interconnected with one another. This interconnectedness transforms healing into a profound experience, where architecture, humanity, and psychology come alive again.
