Abstract

The increasingly limited availability of clean water has encouraged the development of desalination technology, one of which is Reverse osmosis (RO). The performance of RO membrane is highly influenced by the quality of feed water; therefore, a pretreatment process is required to reduce contaminants before the water enters the membrane. One of the pretreatment methods is electrocoagulation, which is a water treatment process that utilizes electric current and metal electrodes to produce coagulants that bind and precipitate contaminant particles. This study aims to analyze the effect of applying electrocoagulation pretreatment on the quality of desalinated water produced by a reverse osmosis system. The experimental variations used were without pretreatment, 10 minutes of electrocoagulation pretreatment, and 20 minutes of electrocoagulation pretreatment. The results showed that the application of electrocoagulation pretreatment improved the performance of the reverse osmosis system in removing contaminants. Increasing the pretreatment time from 10 minutes to 20 minutes reduced the average pretreatmente water TDS from 112 ppm to 68.3 ppm and 58 ppm, with the removal efficiency increasing from 89.13% to 93.37% and 94.34%, respectively. The average pretreatmente water salinity also decreased from 106.67 ppm to 59.33 ppm and 56.00 ppm, with the removal efficiency increasing from 89.44% to 94.13% and 94.46%, respectively. The pH value increased from 6.97 to 8.64 and 8.91 after the electrocoagulation process, then slightly decreased after reverse osmosis to 8.50 and 8.73. In addition, electrocoagulation pretreatment increased the pretreatmente water flow rate from 0.071–0.079 L/min to 0.080–0.089 L/min for the 10-minute pretreatment and 0.103–0.109 L/min for the 20-minute pretreatment. Water quality testing of the 20-minute pretreatment variation showed that most parameters met the water quality standards. However, the pH, aluminum, Total Coliform, and Escherichia coli parameters still did not meet the water quality standards. Therefore, 20 minutes of electrocoagulation pretreatment was the best condition in this study because it improved the performance of the reverse osmosis system in producing water of better quality. However, pH adjustment, reduction of residual aluminum, and a disinfection process are still required to ensure that the desalinated water meets all applicable water quality standards.
