Abstract

Housing preferences are influenced by psychological and sociocultural dimensions that shape an individual's identity in relation to their living space. Place identity, as a component of self-identity, serves as a bridge to understanding how individuals assign meaning to spatial environments, particularly the home. Within an intergenerational context, the meaning attributed to housing can vary significantly between Generation X and Generation Z, driven by distinct historical, economic, and social dynamics. As the parents or primary caregivers of Generation Z, Generation X plays a crucial role in passing down values and mindsets that influence the housing preferences of the subsequent generation.
This study aims to understand how Generation X and Generation Z interpret place identity in relation to their housing preferences. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Qualitative data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews with participants from both generations, while quantitative data were gathered via questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings reveal fundamental differences in how housing is perceived: Generation X is more attached to functionality and symbols of stability, whereas Generation Z prioritizes dynamism, spaces for self-expression, and psychological comfort. This research contributes to the understanding of generation-based interior design and proposes a design approach that is more contextual and adaptive to evolving cross-generational values and identities.
