Abstract

Social and cultural growth has generated an increasingly diverse range of human activities, especially in metropolitan areas. This diversity creates an acoustic condition where anthropic sounds overshadow natural sounds, particularly those produced by animals. This design aims to enhance the presence of natural sounds in metropolitan environments by creating a microclimate. The central concept positions architecture as a signal processor, using cybernetic theory to receive sound inputs, process them, and produce adaptive responses to the dynamics of the surrounding soundscape. The performance-oriented approach focuses the design on the building’s ability to transform sound energy, while the data-driven method uses sound data as a design tool, treating sound as a variable that can be modulated to influence the environmental acoustic condition. The operational principles of digital signal processing are translated into architectural elements through a domain transfer process, allowing sound processing mechanisms to be implemented at the site, building, and detail scales. The design results demonstrate that environmental sound characteristics including frequency, intensity, and propagation direction can serve as the basis for organizing the site, configuring building mass, arranging spatial organization, and developing building systems. The proposed design integrates passive acoustic strategies through mass geometry, vegetation, berms, and perforated façades with active systems consisting of adaptive panels, sensors, microphone arrays, and speaker arrays that function as a sound processing system. This integration enables the building to receive, process, and redistribute anthropogenic sounds into spatial experiences that evoke the perception of natural sounds within the sound forest, library, and other public spaces. Consequently, architecture is no longer conceived as a passive element that merely mitigates noise but evolves into an adaptive system that utilizes sound as a performative material to shape an acoustic microclimate within metropolitan environments.
