Abstract

As part of the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH) development, Benoa Port plays a strategic role as the main gateway for international cruise tourism in Bali. The increasing number of cruise ship arrivals and passengers has not been fully supported by the quality of the arrival terminal, which still faces challenges related to spatial capacity, circulation orientation, and the limited representation of Balinese cultural identity. As a result, the arrival experience has yet to reflect Bali's image as a world-class tourism destination. This design project aims to develop the interior of the Benoa Cruise Terminal arrival area by optimizing operational functions while creating a spatial experience that introduces the identity of Bali from the moment visitors first arrive.
The design adopts the Design Thinking methodology, consisting of the Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test stages, supported by literature review, field observations, interviews, and terminal operational analysis. The proposed concept is based on Tourism Experiential Threshold, which positions the terminal as a transitional space that creates a tourism experience before visitors enter the destination. This concept is translated into three Spatial Design Principles: Threshold, Orientation, and Cultural Expression, which are organized into an experiential sequence of Arrival–Observe–Interact–Appreciate. The design implementation includes the reorganization of passenger zoning and circulation, as well as the application of an Experiential Wayfinding Strategy.
The resulting design creates a more intuitive, efficient, and user experience-oriented arrival area, transforming the terminal from merely a transportation facility into a welcoming medium that reinforces Balinese cultural identity as an international tourism destination.
