Abstract

Pre-Swirl Stator Duct (PSSD) is one of the Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) designed to improve ship propulsive efficiency by conditioning the inflow before it reaches the propeller. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Angle of Attack of PSSD fins on wake characteristics and propulsive efficiency using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Simulations were conducted on a 1:25 scale tanker model with four configurations, namely the bare hull, PSSD 1, PSSD 2, and PSSD 3, through Resistance Test, Open Water Test, and Self-Propulsion Test using an Actuator Disk. The results show that variations in the PSSD fin Angle of Attack affect the distributions of hydrodynamic pressure, relative velocity, axial velocity, and tangential velocity, leading to an increase in the wake fraction from 0.355 for the bare hull to 0.363, 0.418, and 0.422, while reducing the thrust deduction factor from 0.198 to 0.192, 0.147, and 0.146. These flow modifications decreased the open water efficiency (η₀) from 0.480 to 0.478, 0.461, and 0.462, but increased the hull efficiency (ηH) from 1.171 to 1.184, 1.248, and 1.252, resulting in an improvement in the propulsive efficiency (ηD) from 0.562 for the bare hull to 0.566, 0.575, and 0.578. The results demonstrate that variations in the PSSD fin Angle of Attack influence the wake characteristics ahead of the propeller and improve the ship's propulsive efficiency, with PSSD 3 providing the best overall performance.
