Abstract

The hospitality industry is currently experiencing a fundamental paradigm shift towards an experience economy, where visitors actively seek authentic, personalized, and memorable experiences. UTC Convention Hotel Semarang, as a strategic convention facility, still utilizes a generalized approach to public area interior design and has not optimally utilized the potential of local cultural identity. This condition creates a gap between existing facilities and modern user expectations regarding the quality of the spatial experience. This research aims to redesign the interior of UTC Hotel Semarang, focusing on the Lobby, Coffee Shop, and Restaurant, using a multi-sensory design approach based on local culture as an effort to enhance the overall user experience. The design method applied is user-centered Design Thinking, encompassing six iterative stages: Understanding, Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. Data collection was conducted through field observations, in-depth interviews, and distributing questionnaires to target visitors. The data was then analyzed using Empathy Map, User Journey Map, Decision Matrix, and Value Proposition methods to formulate relevant design solutions. The design result carries a "Luxury Contemporary" macro concept with a corporate nuance integrated with the distinct local identity of Semarang City. The local culture approach is applied to the contemporary style through decorative elements featuring Batik Asem Tugu and Batik Asem Arang motifs. Meanwhile, the application of the multi-sensory design approach is realized through five-sense stimulation, which includes visual elements (natural color palettes and local cultural decorative elements), auditory (the strains of traditional Javanese music and live music), olfactory (signature aromatherapy in the reception area), gustatory (Archipelago culinary offerings with live cooking facilities), and tactile (a combination of natural textures from wood materials, bronze mirrors, and linen fabrics). This redesign is expected to provide applicative recommendations for the management to strengthen brand identity, improve the competitiveness of commercial facilities, and create interaction spaces that are aesthetic, comfortable, meaningful, and memorable for every visiting guest.
